8.4 Jay Shetty: Planting Flowers

Image
"There is no plant in the world that grows the day you plant the seed. It takes months, sometimes even years, for a tree to have a beautiful fruit or a beautiful flower." - Jay Shetty How patient are you? The Marshmallow Experiment was a famous psychological study on delayed gratification where researchers put kids in a room with a marshmallow and a choice: Eat the marshmallow now, or wait 15 minutes and get a second one. Years later, the research showed that kids who delayed gratification tended to have better academic performance, healthier lifestyles, and stronger relationships. The study suggests that the ability to resist immediate temptations and delay gratification is linked to long-term success in many areas of life. This is true on so many levels. We want what we want right now, but greatness takes time. Improvement, growth, and mastery never happen overnight. The best athletes, students, and leaders all share one thing: They stay committed long enough to see their w...

1.23 Jay Shetty: The Four Seasons

Image
"If you are satisfied with who you are, you don't need to prove your worth to anyone else.” - Jay Shetty Jay Shetty is the host of one of the top podcasts in the world. Going into the new year, he said instead of focusing on creating New Year’s Resolutions that you will quit before the end of January, focus more on who you want to be and building the habits needed to become that person. Experimenting Season: Now, you have learned some new things and its time to experiment so you can see what works and what doesn’t. Performing Season: It’s time to execute and begin the process towards getting to mastery. Thriving Season: You have mastered what you learned and experimented with, an...

Image
"We overestimate what we can do in one month, and we underestimate what we can do in 12 months, so resolutions often become a one-month thing." - Jay Shetty 365 days from now, who do you want to be, what do you want to be doing, and who do you want to be doing it with? These are questions author, podcaster, and influencer Jay Shetty says we should be asking to start a new year or season. Research says 80% of people stop practicing their New Year’s Resolutions by the end of January, so how can we find a better way to reset and start a new year? By focusing on doing the things we need to do so we can become the people we want to become. Jay says there are 4 types of seasons or years, and every year or season has a different feel and purpose: 1 - Learning 2 - Experimenting 3 - Performing 4 - Thriving Is this a learning year or season where you need to take a step back to learn, grow, and get better, or is this an experimenting season where you are trying to figure out what works...

The Best Part of My Day

Image
One thing that I tell my athletes is that practice, especially practice at home by yourself working on your game has to be the best part of your day if you really want to squeeze the juice and become your best. At my house, we say the same thing.  We try to set aside time every day to work on our different sports, we try to make it family time, and we always say that this is the BEST part of our day. I hope that my kids look back with good memories of us being in the back in the late afternoon when the sun starts to set, shooting hoops, working on our soccer touches, having batting practice, or practicing our tennis swings. Jay Shetty is a former monk who is now an award-winning host, storyteller, and viral content creator who since launching his video channel in 2016, has garnered over 4 billion views and gained over 20 million followers globally.
