Change Your LIfe By Focusing Energy On THE One Thing

Key Takeaways
1 – Organize your life so you can have focused energy
2 – Focus your energy on the One Thing
3 – Train your mind to have more focus

Find The One Thing
There is a great book called The One Thing that pushes the idea that real, sustainable success comes when you are able to focus on one thing.  And not just any one thing … the one thing, that when its done, makes all other tasks much easier, creating a domino effect towards success.  The idea is great and gives a more concrete plan to priotizing your life and following the Pareto Principle.

Make Life Simpler
Once you have completed the most important task on your to-do list, you focus on the next important task, knocking them out one by one.  The idea is that with each task completed, life gets easier because you are doing them in order.  It makes life simpler by focusing on just one thing to do.

I have been watching videos on the ‘What Drives Winning’ YouTube page, and PerformancePsychologist Dr. Jim Loehr’s videos have helped me relook at my coaching philosophy.  There is an article written about him here in which he puts an emphasis on how cultivating your energy levels can lead to higher levels of success.

Focused Energy On The One Thing
According to Loehr, the path to maximizing human capital isn’t better time management. It’s cultivating energy, then maintaining a laser like focus on how you spend it to get what you want out of life.

You Have To Have Full Engagement
Time only has value when there you fill it with high energy activity.  Productivity is not high unless you are present AND ENGAGED.  It is not enough to just ‘be there’ or to ‘be present.’

Control Social Media
Have your down time to just surf social media, but control it.  Manage how you use social media so that you can benefit from it, not be consumed by it.

Organize Your Life
You have to create a space in your life where you are able to maximize your energy by focusing it on the most important tasks.  Creating that space includes proper sleep, diet, and exercise and making sure your home life is clean and in order.

Emotional Growth
Its important to grow mentally and emotionally so that you can accept life’s challenges for what they are: opportunities for growth.

Gratefulness Exercises
Everyday in your head, go over what you are grateful for.  This will help you build up empathy, compassion, and the confident “I can do it” mentality that separates the ‘doers’ from the ‘dreamers.’

Mental Training
It takes time, energy, and effort to train you mind to stay focused on the One Thing.  Don’t get discouraged if at first you keep finding yourself reaching for your Smart Phone while you are trying to get things done.  Like a muscle, your mental concentration will grow over time and your need to be with your phone, or other distractions, will diminish.

Just How Important Is This
Human capital has no value without energy. There’s all this brilliant software between your ears, but it’s null and void without energy. The most important asset you need to protect in order to manage the demands of a job or an investment portfolio is your production of energy.  And, just like with money, if you do a great job managing your energy, you’ll get a great return.
You Train So Bad Times Don’t Throw You Off
People throw their good habits overboard when there’s a crisis. They rationalize: “I don’t have time to eat breakfast or write a list. I’ll do that when things are good.”  We help them understand that you train so bad times don’t get you off course. It’s like the pilot who safely put the plane down in the Hudson River. He could have come apart, but he stayed with his rituals and it saved everyone’s lives. We do that with antiterrorist military forces and surgeons and executives going into troubled environments. They’re ready because they’ve trained for it.

You train so that you have increased energy, less stress, and better time management.
