Wisdom Wednesdays: Vince Lombardi — Be Excellent

Image
Vince Lombardi was a game changing coach of the Green Bay Packers. When he first became the head coach of the Packers, after being a high school coach and assistant at Fordham University, the Army, and the Giants, he was taking over for a team that went 1-10-1 in a town that most people couldn’t find on a map. But he won 5 NFL championships including Super Bowl 1 and 2, never had a losing season, and built one of the most disciplined, values-driven dynasties in sports history. Lombardi led through uncompromising standards, relentless preparation, and deep care for people, believing that excellence is built through daily habits and moral clarity — not motivation or talent alone. He once said, “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.” Excellence is being outstanding or extremely good. Excellence is consistently doing better or more than average — or even good. Define what excellence is in your...

10.13 Vince Lombardi: Chase Perfection

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.” - Vince Lombardi If perfection isn’t possible, why do great teams and leaders still chase it? Vince Lombardi was a legendary American football coach best known for leading the Green Bay Packers to multiple championships and for his enduring legacy as a symbol of discipline, leadership, and excellence. He once said, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.” While no one is or can be perfect, striving for perfection pushes us to perform at our highest level and achieve excellence along the way. We do this by setting high standards and committing to give our best effort every day, even when it’s uncomfortable. It’s about focusing on growth and improvement, not flawless results. When we consistently aim higher, excellence becomes the natural outcome of our effort and discipline. Question of the Day: How can we raise our standards and give our best effort, even wh...

3.28 Vince Lombardi: Wanting to Win

“Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is.” - Vince Lombardi You can’t always control whether you win or not. Sometimes, your opponent is too big, strong, experienced, and good to overcome. But that should never impact how you show up, do your job, add value, and compete. Legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is.” Coach Lombardi was known for his demanding coaching style and relentless pursuit of excellence. This quote says that the pursuit of greatness and excellence is just as important as the result. Your will is a strong intention or desire to do something. When your will is strong enough, you will wake up or show up early, you will do your job with integrity and excellence, and you will find ways to add value. My favorite athlete of all time is Michael Jordan. He was blessed with a lot of talent and world-class athleticism, but he was also blessed with an intense will to compete and get better. When Jor...
