4.8 Venus Williams: Have Hope
How do you maintain hope when hope feels lost?
Venus and Serena Williams were raised in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles, learning how to play tennis on courts that probably didn’t get a lot of use as tennis courts and under some very tough circumstances, but through determination, hard work, and hope, they became two of the best tennis players in the world.
Venus once said, “Just believe in yourself. Even if you don't pretend that you do, and some point, you will.”
I like to say, “Have hope.” Hope is the expectation that something good is going to happen to you and through you, and if you keep working, going, and growing, you can maintain some level of hope that your hard work will pay off.
But what do you do in the middle - the part between when you start verse when you make it? How do you have and maintain hope in the middle?
I like to pretend in my mind that I made it, and then I think about what it would have taken for me to get there. So, if my dream is to play in college or professionally, I pretend that I’ve already made it, and then I think about what I had to do to get there.
Then I do it.
A hopeful person refuses to be negative even when they deal with the storms of life. Find hope and don’t lose it.
Question of the Day: How do you find hope and keep it, or how can you pretend until you find it?
