5.20 Michelle Kwan: Learn from Setbacks and Challenges

“The biggest lessons I learned were probably the times where I had the biggest setbacks and the biggest challenges - when I had the biggest jumps forward and lessons learned.” - Michelle Kwan

What is something you are struggling with right now, and what can you learn from it?

Life is full of ups and downs. Once you beat one challenge, it’s only a matter of time before the next one comes, so learning how to overcome setbacks and adversity is a big part of life, being successful, and being happy.

I’ve learned how to appreciate challenges because challenges give me the opportunity to practice patience and grow my character. I have learned the most about myself through setbacks.

Michelle Kwan was an Olympic figure skater. She once said, “The biggest lessons I learned were probably the times where I had the biggest setbacks and the biggest challenges - when I had the biggest jumps forward and lessons learned.”

Setbacks and challenges aren’t usually fun, but they help us grow into the best versions of ourselves. Accept them and learn from them. When I’m going through a challenge, I start spinning down the Doom Loop where negative thoughts lead to negative actions to more negative thoughts. I’ve learned how to stop, think about what I’m thinking about, and then ask myself, “What is this challenge or setback trying to teach me?”

This helps me do two things: I realize the challenge might not be as big in real life as it is in my mind, and puts me in a growth mindset so I can learn from them and be better in the future.

Question of the Day: How can you better learn from setbacks and challenges?
